Tretinoin
After sunscreen, this is my next heavy hitter.
The “gold standard” of anti-aging. The “holy grail” of the age defying skin routine. That’s pretty much the consensus. I haven’t seen any dissenting opinions. The experts seem to agree pretty uniformly that tretinoin is key to preventing and even correcting fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and skin damage.
Many people are familiar with this as Retin-A, the acne fighting, topical prescription medication used so often in younger adulthood. Also effective on the skin for different reasons in later adulthood, I would not wait until I see major aging or skin damage to start this. I started at 37 years old and would have started earlier had I known.
It is irritating and quite drying to the skin. Most people need to start with a lower strength and then slowly work to a higher strength as they tolerate. Also many people begin their regimen using this only 3-4 days per week and slowly increase this as tolerated. Moisturizer will also be important, especially with ceramics. Skin will be sensitive to the sun so spf will be imperative (but you’re already doing this, of course). And make sure to apply at night as the UV light breaks it down and you won’t get the results you want.
I truly recommend following Angie Hot and Flashy for her scientific and realistic approach to skincare. As you can see in her photos above, a consistent routine of tretinoin (she also uses topical vitamin C) has actually smoothed the pigmentation of her skin as well as her wrinkles drastically over 5 years of use.
